Tracy McGrady is rumored to have an interest in playing for the back-2-back NBA Champion Los Angeles Lakers. This comes a week after the Lakers finished off the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals.
Ron Artest is reported to have reached out to his former Houston Rocket's teammate Tracy McGrady. The former All-Star has never made it out of the first round of the playoffs, and with a chance to play with the Lakers, he could have the opportunity to "end his career as a champion."
However, McGrady would have to take a severe pay cut. Last year before the Rockets traded him to the New York Knicks, he was making about $23 million that year -- easily tops in the NBA, beating out Kobe Bryant by a few thousand dollars.
The Los Angeles Lakers will probably let Jordan Farmar and Adam Morrison walk into free agency. That will free up some cash to sign the 2-time scoring champion, Tracy McGrady to a mid-level salary. It is about the same amount Ron Artest made last year (roughly $5 million per year).
Not the player he was in his prime, McGrady won't be averaging nearly as many point as in past season. However, he will bring a solid scoring presence to the Lakers' bench, a bench that has been inconsistent for many years now. He easily could win the 6th Man of the Year Award for the 2010-2011 NBA Season.
The only down side is that he has been hindered with back injuries for the past few years and his play may be limited. But this may work, Tracy already has the money, he already the accolades. All he needs is a ring.

I love how ppl find it so easy to dog players that have been injured, as if they get injured on purpose... I wld love to see some of those same lames get out on the court and go 1qt with just a hang nail, they cldn't do it. But they'll sit home, fat and lazy and judge. SMH!!!

Tracey is worse that Vince use to be...half man half a season...he made all the wrong choices instead of putting in his dues...and now that he is plaged with injury it's very iffy. IF he can stay healthy he can give Kobe some well deserved rest to help him get ring 6 and maybe 7.

Yeah Mark, he made all the wrong decisions like injuring his shoulder, back and destroying his knee on behalf of the Rockets. I guess you could add hitching his wagon to an oft injured Yao Ming in, hopes of a Kobe & Shaq duo. Other than that the guy has always shown up in the playoffs: 28 pts. 6 rbds. 6 asts. and an efficiency rating close to Kobe's. Vince dreams of having numbers like that.
I don't know the exact extent of T-macs injuries, but often times it takes 2 seasons to fully bounce back from ligament damage in the knees. I think the attitude of many bitter Rockets fans suck. Christ, he suited up before games late in the season with the desire to go out and play and Rick Adelman, out of retaliation, forced him to stay on the bench. So the A--hole goes from one season, expecting his superstar to compete and further injure his knee and potentially do irreperable damage, (even when the season is basically a lost cause with yao out) to the next season, keeping him out of games when T-Mac insists he's ready and healthy enough to play. Then the Rockets blame Tracy for being injured and call him a whiner. Well, as a backup guard to Kobe, T-Mac could be used exactly like Odom is with the Lakers bigs, coming off the bench for extended minutes when artest or Kobe need a breather or get into foul trouble. He wouldn't play starter minutes and as a 4th option scorer, behind kobe, gasol, bynum he wouldn't have the added pressure of being the go-to guy to carry the offensive load. I think he needs a complete physical from team doctors, but if he's truly healthy and fully rehabbed, and willing to take the MLE pay cut, his signing could be the next piece of the championship juggernaut puzzle. Bring on LeBron, Bosh and the rest of the superfriends.
The FACT from last season was that Adelman didn't want Tracy to come back until he was ready to play. Once T-Mac suited up, the plan was to limit his minutes until he demonstrated that he could go full-speed. Tracy insisted that he was ready to go for more minutes -- the team's medical staff and coaching staff disagreed. Tracy asked for a trade. He was traded. He proved, during his time with the Knicks, that he WASN'T ready to go! Gee -- the coaches and medical staff were right, T-Mac was gone. Hey -- the Knicks have lots of money available right now. If Tracy is poised to be a fine contributor, why haven't the Knicks tried to bring him back? No hate -- just facts, and a reasonable question. And, BTW, I personally would LOVE to see Tracy join either the Lakers or the Heat...
