This is How the Lakers Can Get Tracy McGrady

From • August 3, 2010

The defending champions haven't been sitting still while the rest of the league are beefing up their rosters. They have quietly been making significant moves.

The Lakers have acquired Steve Blake, Matt Barnes, Theo Ratliff, and two potential draft picks. They've also lost Jordan Farmar and Josh Powell to free agency. They probably won't re-sign Adam Morrison and DJ Dbenga, and they are in negotiations to re-sign Shannon Brown.

If the Lakers want Tracy McGrady this is how it should play out:

There have been rumors that the Lakers are willing to ship Sasha Vujacic out of LA. How should they go about doing this? Well, the last team Tracy McGrady played for was the New York Knicks and they own the rights to re-sign the former all-star.

The salary cap for the 2010-2011 season would be about $56-57 million. The Knicks so far are at $44.7 million and they still have the necessary amount to re-sign Tmac to $5 million or less.

Sasha will be making $5.4 million on his last year of his contract. The Knicks should re-sign Tmac for about the same amount as Sasha and both teams do a sign-and-trade. The Knicks would receive the expiring contract of Sasha Vujacic and the Lakers will have a solid off-season by putting an exclamation mark to the free agency frenzy.

What a team the Lakers would have!

Center - Andrew Bynum, Theo Ratliff
Power Forward - Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom
Small Forward - Ron Artest, Matt Barnes, Luke Walton (Might be out the whole season due to back surgery)
Shooting Guard - Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady (Will fix the Kobe backup problem)
Point Guard - Derek Fisher, Steve Blake, Shannon Brown (Can also play some Shooting Guard)

What do you guys think?

  • Even I would do this trade.

  • I work baby, I work (Big Daddy Kane).

  • The knicks are rumored to be seaking expiring contracts so they can rebuild in 2011 after failing on get lebron. The knicks are also maybe the dumbest team in the NBA in their recent history so they would be dumb enough to trade mcgrady for sasha.. not out of the ordinary and on their roster caracter and walton would sit on the bench in suits not dressed while ebanks ratliff and shannon will be those 3 people PJ has a history of not playing for example 09 powell sun yue and dj mbenga 2010 morrison dj mbenga and walton (walton or sasha) p.s. this is the only way the lakers can get both shannon and mcgrady and not that unlikely when you think about it i just doubt the lakers would trade sasha for a similar salary after signing shannon

  • Sasha for tmac would be sweet! tmac will be very productive on this team because he would be surrounded with talent. These could his stats: 12ppg, 3apg, 3rbpg. that would be good for a bench player.

  • Are you all retarded?
Do you even know Lakers are in luxury tax, meaning $1 for $1.
Do you think Mitch would pay $10M for a player even Clippers passed on.
We don't even want him for vet's minimum of 1.3M, he's a cancer.
    But keep on dreaming.
Yeah, we'll trade Sasha for TMac, and then we could trade, say, Walton
for A.Iverson for another $12M (Tax included), and we're ready to roll, but roll
    downhill.

    • where did you get ten million??? the knicks would never sign him to 5 million therefore we would get him for like 3 at the most its not dreaming mitch just has to be willing to work around salary cap opsticals one signing at a time

      • The 10 mil came because every dollar that's made by these players are also given to the lux tax penalty. So basically, we are paying 10.8 million for Sasha this year, so the Lakers would prefer to trade him and pay Shannon Brown around 4 million this year(which would be actually 8 mil total), but at least he is young and a part of their near future....Sasha isn't anymore. Only way we get T-Mac is if he begs the Lakers and Luke Walton is put on the medical not-able to play list. The, T-Mac would have to sign a none guaranteed deal, so that the Lakers could cut him if he becomes a cancer. We really don't need T-Mac, but i would take him with none guaranteed money and limited mins.

    • I am the idiot

  • Stop hating on tmac. he is still got some left in the tank. if joined lakers it would be a great move. he can play 12-20 minuters per game. he should stay healthy and win his 1st ring.

    • the problem with this is that T-Mac still believes he's a "go-to" guy. That's why the Bulls didn't sign him, they could tell by his conversation that he is not gonna be happy getting bench mins. That's why he isn't trying to go to the Lakers...not enough mins for him. He thinks he can still be a 1st or 2nd option at worse, and I'm sorry, but T-Mac is not that player anymore. Ego's ain't no joke in the NBA...reality will hit him soon, very soon.

      • Bulls are dumb. Tmac would be easily in the starting lineup.
        Rose, Tmac, Deng, Boozer, Noah

  • dosent matter all wont work, he wants to START not play 20 minutes he feels he can still be great player

  • I doubt this would work for a number of reasons.

    1. When he said that he was willing to join the heat for vet's minimum the the lakers management became enraged, it was said that he wouldn't accept less than MLE type money. So the lakers moved on and as of late they've shown no interest in him, when the lakers have no interest in a player the chances of him getting signed by the team is very unlikely.

    2. New york has already offered a contract to shannon brown, him accepting that offer makes this a major concern for the lakers. Just think about if brown is gone, vujacic is gone, and with mcgrady's injury history, you have to wonder how screwed would the lakers be if he got hurt. McGrady could only come to L.A if they had brown or vujacic as insurance, but if brown leaves that won't be the case.

    3. You need to understand that the lakers don't want to pay shannon brown more than 2.5mil a year because of the dollar to dollar luxury tax they would have to pay. But what brown has going for him mcgrady doesn't which is that the lakers actually want to sign him. So what on god's green earth makes you think they would be willing pay mcgrady more when they don't even have interest in him.

Last but not least this is a quote from another blog post i read which sums up perfectly why the lakers signing tmac would be a huge mistake.

"TMac’s size, smooth moves, and devastating aerial act once brought fear into the eyes of defenders, but no longer. His scoring has taken a severe header into the pavement the past three seasons (25 ppg in 06-07, 8 ppg last year), his shooting percentages were never good but they’re now atrocious (39% each of the past two abbreviated seasons), and his first-step quickness to the hole is a thing of the past (3.4 free throw attempts per 36 minutes last year - that’s slow white shooter territory – what’s that? Danilo Gallinari averaged 4.0 per 36 last year. ouch). He’s still a decent passer for his size, but that was never exactly his calling card.

So everything he ever had skill-wise is gone, plus he’s injured all the time, but should teams consider him for his veteran intangibles? In a word, no. He screwed around with the Rockets for the past two years, has never been a student of the game, could be called “selfish” and “lacking heart” without much argument, and he’s never gotten past the first round of the playoffs. Hopefully you didn’t forget this important piece of information. As intimidating as his offense once was with a couple different teams, McGrady has never played in the second round of the playoffs. You’d think a future Hall of Famer who was never dealt quite the turd sandwich Iverson was in Philly would win a series just by dumb luck (or by teaming up with Yao Ming), but he can’t even offer post-season experience to an aspiring club.

No veteran team looking to get over the hump needs him, no young team looking for leadership would want him, and his skills aren’t really skills anymore. The Bulls looked like his last chance, and it appears they’re going to pass. McGrady should retire, which seems kind of silly considering he was the highest paid player in the league last year at $25 million, but this is the mess you get yourself into when you rely on your athleticism to make every play you’ve ever made and you never add those intangibles that would make you desirable after the age of 30".

    • johne might be right, a little to good to be truth and we really don't even need him so i don't really see this happening

      • I think we do need him. I say do a sign and trade with tmac for sasha and future 1st round pick.
        PG-FISHER/BLAKE
        SG-BRYANT/TMAC/BROWN
        SF-ARTEST/BARNES/EBANKS
        PF-GASOL/ODOM/CARACTER
        C-BYNUM/RATLIFF

        • youre dumb

        • this list is great, just take off T-Mac and we have 12 above average players. And, with Bynum, Brown, Ebanks and Caracter, we have some grat young pieces to build on in 3-4 years from now...Oh yea...Kobe will still be playing then, he'll retire at 40 with 8 rings or more...

        • Really, do you even know basketball. If they do the sign and trade the lakers are getting a good deal anyway. First round pick? Are you smoking crack. Its not going to happen.

          • What are you talking about? Lakers trade sasha vujacic, future 1st round pick to Knicks for Tmac. Then resign brown to a 2 year deal.

        • Now that sounds better. Knicks get Sasha and first rounder for T-Mac. But I still don't think it would happen. If it happens then that's good for the Lakers. but if it doesn't that's good for the Knicks. do you really think that the knicks would even get a good player with the lakers pick. they would most likely be ranked 28th pick and up. the knicks shouldn't go with it and re-sign T-Mac and maybe get brown. If the Knicks do the sign and trade then the are only showing that they are the same old Knicks.

          • shannon brown is going to resign with the lakers. lakers wiil keep vujacic until trade deadline. lakers please offer tmac a vet minimum. if he rejects it, move on.

  • Only if Kobe ok's it.

  • The lakers are trying to ship out sashas contract so they can afford to sign shannon brown, doing a sign and trade would defeat the purpose of shipping out sasha.

  • this is the dumbest idea ive heard in a while and anyone that thinks this would work is completely incompetent period. mcgrady has always been vastly overrated, and that was when he could still play more than 10 games a yr. the guy has no D at all, is a poor passer, and isnt in good shape. youre a moron .

    • How was tmac overrated? he was on a dumb team while in orlando. also, he is a good passer. tmac had to do everything while he was on the magic even when he was hurt. this guy would do anything to prove he still has game. Tmac sign with the LAKERS for vet minimum. shannon brown can only dunk. brown has a low basketball IQ. lakers should keep vujacic and sign tmac.

  • I'm going to keep this short. If the Knick do go ahead with the sign and trade, t-mac for Sasha. it would only benefit the Lakers. Just think about it for a sec. T-Mac averages 21.5 ppg and Sasha 2.8 ppg. There is nothing to talk about here. Its better for the Knicks to re-sign T-mac and maybe get brown on board.
